Why do sitcom couples always have such small beds?

remember dan and roseanne?? are the directors doing this because sets are small or is it to give the viewer the idea that they are very close? in real life, i think couples want the biggest beds they can buy or have room for. i know that is true for me...Why do sitcom couples always have such small beds?
To get them both in shot!

I bet it is because tv screens are comparatively narrow and they want to get the full room in the shot.





I've never really noticed that the beds are small, though, actually-- maybe I'm not observant.
